Other courses available include a Diploma of Conveyancing and an Advanced Diploma of Conveyancing.

Conveyers Licensing

Companies and individuals carrying a conveyancing business must both be licensed. Companies must also have at least one director who is a licensed conveyancer. An Australian legal practitioner can conduct conveyancing work and are not required to hold a conveyancer’s licence.

If you are an employee undertaking conveyancing work within a conveyancing business, operated by a licensed conveyancer, you do not need to have a licence. However, if you have been disqualified from doing conveyancing work you cannot continue unless you or your employer obtains an exemption from the Business Licensing Authority.

If you are unsure whether you need a conveyancer’s licence, we do suggest seeking independent legal advice. Refer to the Business Licensing Authority of Victoria for more information regarding obtaining a licence: http://www.bla.vic.gov.au/home/conveyancers.

Taking the next step:

When you have made the decision to move into a new conveyancing role, ask yourself what you really want to gain from your next position. We want to find the best conveyancing job for you, that you will enjoy and be successful in. This will depend on your particular strengths and what sort of environment you want to work in. When considering specific conveyancing jobs, look at your CV and focus on the experience and education you have and make sure this stands out.

So if you’re ready to take a step forward in your career as a conveyancer, it’s a good idea to think seriously about the type of environment you’d like to work in. There are different advantages at different firms, depending on their size, location and type of work they do, as well as the culture that is developed by the actual people who work there. The size of the firm you decide to work within can determine the culture and support that is offered. For example if you enjoy working in a fast-paced, corporate environment with a large team that will make the best use of your organisational skills, you may prefer to look into working at the top or mid tier law firms. Larger firms usually have more availability for support and training, where smaller firms can be more relaxed and personal, offering you more opportunity to be involved in wider responsibilities.

As specialist legal recruiters, we know the Melbourne and Sydney legal industry well and can provide you with the advice you need to make an informed decision about where to go next.
